The letters from which this little volume has been compiled, were written from a son to his parents without thought of publication. No attempt has been made to alter their careless and informal character, although material of a confidential nature has been omitted. The only justification for printing them, is that they give some first-hand impressions of a participant---to however slight a degree---in the world's greatest drama. Their author was a graduate of St. Paul's School and Princeton University and a law student at Harvard when the war began. It is not expected that the letters will interest any but the writer's family and friends, for whom alone, and with his somewhat reluctant consent, they have been published.
