From the Foreword:

Harvard's Military Record in the World War contains the service records of eleven thousand three hundred and nineteen men, including three hunndred and seventy-one whose names are on the Roll of Honor. But it is not and does not pretend to be a complete record. It is rather a compilation of the reports sent in at the request of the Harvard War Records Office by the men themselves or by their families.
