Holt was just 20 when he joined the American Ambulance Field Service in 1917 and sailed for France. When his six-month stint was over, he enlisted in the American Air Service, won his wings, and was assigned as an observer-bombardier-gunner with the American air squad.
His diary and letters from March 1917 to July 1919 are accompanied by his photographs.
