Baldwin's book is outstanding in two respects. He writes superbly on the military and naval aspects of the war. His narratives of the various campaigns are concise and accurate. Second, as was to be expected, he presents his material in the lean, muscular prose of a first-rate reporter. The book is eminently readable.
