I was assigned here to work with this "Reccy" outfit. They were billeted in the old castle and village on top of this conical craggy hill, surrounded by snowy peaks and greening valleys. By day, we could watch the German soldiers at their posts across the valley. At night, they and the Indian soldiers would sneak down into the valley to lay booby traps and shoot at each other. In the morning, I would go down and pick up the wounded. It was a kind of game, but deadly serious. The Front Line had been stable there for months.
Location: Civitella, in the Appennini Mountains.
