Born January 25, 1921 in Paris, the son of Adrien-Louis Boris and Sonia Jokelson. His full name is Jean Mathieu Alphonse Boris. As a child and teen he was with the Éclaireurs unionistes de France, a protestant scout organization. He attended the lycée Janson de Sailly and in 1939 was evacuated to Rennes.
At 19 Boris joins the Free French Forces and during his service met AFS ambulance drivers at Bir Hacheim. In 1946 he was awarded an AFS French Fellowship for the former members of the French resistance to study in the USA. He was one of the first six AFS French college students in 1946-47, he attended Columbia and Syracuse University and received an MA in engineering. At the time he was married to Monique Hecker (1925-2010), another AFS 1946-47 participant. They were later divorced and Boris married the American actress Ellie Pine in the 1950's.
He was a childhood friend of Léo Wormser (*1922), another AFS French fellow in 1946-47 who received an AFS Fellowship to study chemistry at Columbia University..
