William Kirkland Du Val was born on June 3, 1925, in Montclair, New Jersey, to Merlin K. Du Val, Sr. and Margaret Smith.
Du Val attended Williams College and then applied to become an ambulance driver with the American Field Service (AFS) in early 1943.
He sailed from New York in April 1943 and arrived in Bombay, India, in July. He was repatriated to the United States in the summer of 1944 and reapplied for volunteer service with AFS in August. Du Val served in Burma with the British 14th Army, was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant in February 1945, and advanced to the rank of Lieutenant in April. He was repatriated to the United States in November 1945 and received the 1939-1945 Star, the Burma Star, and the Defense Medal for his service with AFS.
After Williams College, Du Val studied at the Union Theological Seminary in New York City. In 1949 he married Sally "Nancy" Taggart of Montclair and in 1956 they moved with their 20 month old daughter Margy to Geneva, Switzerland, where Reverend Du Val was on the staff of the World Council of Churches servicing Eastern Bloc refugees. In 1962, meanwhile a family of 5, they returned to the U.S. and settled back in Montclair.
After retirement they split their time between Montclair NJ, Normandy Beach NJ and Tafton PA.
Du Val passed away on June 27, 2004.
