Longshaw Kraus Porritt was born on October 12, 1895 in Farmington CT to Annie Gertrud Webb and Edward O. Porritt. While a child the family lived in England and in South Africa before settling in Hartford in 1903.

He graduated from Hartford Public High School in 1915, then attended Cornell (Class of 1919).
In 1917 he enlisted with the American Field Service, sailing for France in March. Porritt was assigned to SSU 17 and left for the Western Front at the end of April. He was liberated in September and enlisted in the U.S. Naval Air Service.  Injured and reconvalescing he was discharged in December 1917 when he joined the ARC in Italy and served as an ambulance driver with Section Four on the Piave River.
Upon his return to the U.S. Porritt worked at the Travellers Insurance Company.

In 1931 his occupation was that of an insurance advisor in Hartford CT.
